Cyclocross is a combination bike race and obstacle course in the mud, where racers ride and carry their bikes through a twisting course, carry their bikes over barriers and up steep hills. For a photographer--especially one used to the challenges of paddlesports photography, it’s much easier to shoot: more access, no need for complex waterproof gear, and a continuous stream of riders. The downside is that the setting--without the unique reflective quality and texture of water, takes some other tools to convey the combination of intensity, athleticism, and fun.

These images were shot at races in Oregon and Washington in fall 2016.
